How to Prepare 67th BPSC Mains Exam 2021 - Books and Syllabus

Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) is the organization responsible for conducting the recruitment process of State Service Officers through Competitive Examinations (BPSC Exams) and interviews to the services of various departments of the Government of Bihar. BPSC recruits officers for the State Civil Service through the BPSC Common Combined Competitive Examination.


BPSC Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2021

Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) is one of the most reputed State Level Civil Services Exam conducted for recruitment to multiple posts such as Sub Divisional Officer, Rural Development Officer, District Sanapark Officer and other PCS level Officers etc. The BPSC Syllabus is set by the Bihar Public Service Commission. BPSC Prelims and Mains Syllabus is set by the Bihar Public Service Commission. The commission is constitutionally incorporated to assist the Bihar State Government in matters of recruitment, transfer, and disciplinary matters, of public service in the state. BPSC Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Like the other State Service Commission and UPSC, BPSC also conduct the Combined Competitive BPSC Exam in three stages. Candidates can check the stages below.

  1. Prelims: One objective type paper for 150 marks.
  2. Mains: Four Papers
  3. Interview: 120 marks

Candidates have to clear each stage in order to be eligible for the next stage, if candidates clear the prelims, they can give the mains, clearing which they would be summoned for the final stage i.e., interview of the BPSC Exam.


BPSC Mains Exam Pattern

The BPSC Main Exam have a qualifying paper General Hindi. Apart from this, there will be General Studies Paper 1 (GS-I) and General Studies Paper 2 (GS-II) carrying 300 marks each. There will be an Optional Paper that the candidate has chosen earlier while filling the Application Form. The Optional Paper carries 300 marks. The list of the 34 Optional Subjects has been given below.

Important Points:

  • General Hindi Paper is qualifying in nature (30 % Marks required), Its marks will not be considered in the calculation of merit list.
  • Questions of General Studies are available in Hindi and English both.
  • The score will be arrived at by considering the total of 900 marks in GS Paper 1, GS Paper 2 and Optional Paper.
  • The candidates who are placed suitably in the merit are called for the interview.
  • There is no negative marking in the descriptive question papers.
  • Candidates need to attempt all the papers to qualify for the Interview round.
  • This round is both scoring and qualifying in nature.
General Studies Paper - I 

(1) Modern History of India and Indian culture (3 Out of 6 Questions = 38x3=114 Marks)
(2) Current events of national and international importance (3 Out of 5 Questions = 38x3=114 Marks)
(3) Statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams (3 Out of 4 Questions = 36x2= 72 Marks)

Section - I. Modern History of India and Indian culture 
  • Modern History of India and Indian Culture will cover the broad history of the country (with special reference to Bihar) from about the middle of nineteenth century. 
  • The modern history of Bihar will include questions on the introduction and expansion of western education (including technical education). 
  • It will also have questions on Bihar’s role in the freedom struggle of India. 
  • Questions will relate to the Santhal Uprising, 1857 in Bihar, Birsa movement, Champaran Satyagrah and the Quit India Movement 1942. 
  • A knowledge of the chief features of Mauryan and Pal art and Patna Qulam painting will be expected from the examinees. 
  • It would also include questions or Gandhi, Tagore and Nehru. 
Section - II. Current events of national and international importance
  • This Part will have Questions from Current Affairs covering various dimensions of News. This section is very broad in Nature. It covers all the Important News and Current Affairs from Last One Year.

Section - II. Statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams (Data Interpretation)
  • The part relating to statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams will include exercises to test the candidate’s ability to draw common sense conclusions from information presented in statistical, graphical or diagrammatical form and to point out deficiencies, limitations or inconsistencies therein.

General Studies Paper - II

(1) Indian Polity (3 Out of 4 Questions = 38x3=114 Marks)
(2) Indian economy and Geography of India (3 Out of 4 Questions = 38x3=114 Marks)
(3) The role and impact of science and technology in the development of India (2 Out of 4 Questions = 36x2= 72 Marks)

Section - I. Indian Polity
  • The part relating to Indian Polity, will include questions on the political system in India including Bihar.
Section - II. Indian economy and Geography of India
  • In the part pertaining to the Indian Economy and Geography of India, questions will be put on planning in India and the physical, economic and social geography of India and Bihar.
Section - II. The role and impact of science and technology in the development of India
  • In the third part relating to the role and impact of science and technology in the development of India, questions will be asked to test the candidate’s awareness of the role and impact of science and technology in India and Bihar Emphasis will be on applied aspects

BPSC Optional

In BPSC Mains, candidates have to select one optional subject out of 34 subjects. There will be only one optional subject exam for 300 marks and the questions will be of Honors Level (3-year course in Patna University).
